About the Program

We have adopted the evidence-based curriculum supported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Transition to Practice Program™ with the goal of providing a structured program designed to facilitate orientation of experienced RNs to new practice settings.

The RN Fellowship program is managed by Valarie Grumme, PhD, RN, CCRN-K, Director of the RN Fellowship Program. The program is supported by a team of accomplished CNOs, Directors of Education, and Clinical Nurse Educators at each Memorial hospital location.

Mission Statement

Provide a structured, evidence-based, synergistic program to support experienced RN transition to new specialty practice areas .

RN Fellows will develop expertise in their new practice setting and continue their professional journey with specialty certification and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Highlights

You will gain the theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience needed to provide patient- and family-centered care within Emergency Services, Critical Care, CVI/IR, Cath Lab, Oncology, OR, PACU, L & D, CVIMCU, NICU, Nursery, PICU or Pediatric Services. Highlights include:

  • One-year program created to transition experienced RNs into new specialty practice areas.
  • Evidence-based curriculum supported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Transition to Practice™ Program.
  • Program includes specialty classroom training, simulation, hands-on practice in the clinical environment, and bi-monthly seminars focusing on professional growth in specialty practice, evidence-based practice and leadership skills.
  • Group support within your specialty cohort and access to a designated Nurse Educator.
  • Opportunity to impact clinical practice by developing an evidence-based practice project.
  • Invitation to a specialty certification review course upon completion of the Program.

Requirements

This Program is offered to nurses with the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of hospital experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. ASN accepted with the provision that candidate be enrolled in an RN-BSN program by end of the first year of employment and complete within three (3) years of employment.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida (via Florida Board of Nursing or Nurse Compact licensure endorsement).
  • Current BLS.
  • Current ACLS for Healthcare Provider card for all adult specialties except Case Manager, Infection Preventionist and RN Refresh to Acute Care positions.
  • Willingness to make a two-year commitment as a full-time employee in the assigned specialty area.

  • Practice professionalism regarding engagement, work ethic and attitude.
  • Embrace the Memorial mission and vision, as well as follow policies and procedures.
  • Participate in all learning experiences and program components.
  • Attend all scheduled seminars to support your knowledge base and build on your practice.
  • Complete all program surveys and evaluations.
  • Present your Evidence-Based Practice Project.
  • Attend the RN Fellowship Graduation Celebration.

Case Manager

Description:
You will apply your advanced clinical skills to facilitate the management of the patient experience through assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation. The goal for Case Managers is to improve clinical outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and promote cost-effectiveness.

Clinical Nurse Educator

Description:
This full-time position reports to the Nurse Manager or DOE. The position includes an intense focus on the orientation, oversight, and support of new nurse graduates, new unit hires, and continuing education needs of nursing staff for the assigned unit(s). Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience and a BSN or MSN to join this track.

Your orientation will consist of coursework, simulation training, and a preceptorship with an experienced Clinical Nurse Educator.

Description:
Memorial Hospital Pembroke has a 24 bed critical care unit that offers high level training in a safe and nurse focused atmosphere with some of the most highly trained intensivist in the entire healthcare system. The highly specialized care provided includes management of patients on multiple critical care drips, CRRT, ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, complex patient care and patients undergoing multiple types of complex bedside procedures. We have an excellent team of experienced nurses to learn and train you in a variety of critical care situations. Memorial Hospital is the perfect place to start your critical care career.

Description:
We offer 32 critical care beds and care for a variety of patient types. The care provided includes management of patients on multiple drips, CRRT, ventilators, EVD’s, IABP, ICP’s, Flo Trac, and patients undergoing multiple types of bedside procedures. This is a very high acuity ICU.

Description:
This is a 30 bed ICU staffed with 80 RNs, clinical managers, nurse clinician, nurse manager, unit secretaries, PCAs, paramedics and a mobility tech.. We have a very robust Clinical Ladder with 20 RN Level III and 8 RN Level IV, along with a full time Intensivist program with 17 critical care physicians and 2 APRN’s. We care for patients on multiple drips, ventilators, CVVH, temperature management and IABP’s. Our multi-disciplinary team (which includes but is not limited to pharmacy, dietary, respiratory therapy, case management, social work and physical therapy) collaborate to achieve the best outcomes for our patients and their families.

We offer 24 critical care beds and care for a variety of patient types ranging from level one trauma patients, high risk maternal fetal medicine patients, renal transplant patients, complex thoracic and general surgery patients, neuro surgical and neuro interventional patients. The care provided includes management of patients on multiple drips, CRRT, ventilators, EVD’s, Camino’s, ICP’s, Flo Trac, and patients undergoing multiple types of bedside procedures.

Description:
The Cardiac and Vascular Interventional Suites (CVIS) is a full service tertiary care department with 12 state-of-the-art invasive procedure rooms. All rooms have the ability to perform adult and pediatric procedures including functioning as operating rooms for a variety of complex Hybrid procedures. Memorial CVIS has expanded our already robust Interventional Program. We now have an integrated EP lab within our multifaceted space. The CVIS cares for approximately 35-45 patients per day including TAVR, structural heart, complex Neuro and Interventional radiology procedures, and Electrophysiology. The Registered Nurse provides patient care as part of a multi-disciplinary team based on national standards, and utilizing the nursing process.

Description:
The MHW Cardiac Cath Lab has 3 Cardiac Cath procedure rooms and a 6 bay pre/post area. Minimally invasive, lifesaving procedures to treat cardiovascular diseases are performed here. This is where an Acute “STEMI” or “Heart Attack” is treated emergently through our “Code Heart “ alert process and multiple lives are saved! The ability to utilize critical thinking skills and react quickly in emergency situations along with strong teamwork is essential!

Description:
The MHW Interventional Radiology Department has 3 IR rooms, 1 CT room, 1 Ultrasound room, an 8 bay and additional 3 bay pre-op area. An array of Image-guided, minimally invasive, life-saving procedures are performed here. The patient population consist of adult patients with a vast array of conditions including “Acute Stroke” treated by our IR/Neurointerventional Radiologists. Utilization of critical thinking skills and handling emergency situations along with strong teamwork is essential!

Description:
The 6 North CVIMCU is a high-acuity 30 bed cardiac specialty unit. The CVIMCU Nurses specialize in the care of post-CVICU Heart Surgery patients (CABG, multi-Valve Replacements, Aortic Dissections), both Adult and Adult Congenital including Heart Transplants, Post TAVR and Mitral Clip patients. CVIMCU Nurses also provide care for all advanced Heart Failure patients with mechanical devices (LVADs) and advanced hemodynamic monitoring such as PA catheters/Swan Ganz catheters and beginning mid-January 2022 will also care for stable Impella patients.

When seconds count, the Emergency Department team at Memorial Hospital Pembroke stands ready to meet the needs of our community. We proudly care for > 40,000 adult and pediatric patients per year. Our emergency room team is highly trained in TNCC, ACLS, ENPC, PALS, Resuscitation, and we serve the community as a Primary Stroke Center. We treat a variety of injuries and illnesses and offer on-site education along with the opportunity of leadership advancement. Labor and delivery at MHW consist of 12 labor rooms, 7 bays in our OBED and 2 OR suites. Our staff has specialized training, in triage, labor and delivery, antepartum, OR, recovery room. It is a diverse area with many emergencies that require advance critical thinking skills. Labor and Delivery nurses collaborate with other members of the healthcare delivery team including, physicians, midwifes, anesthesiologist to deliver quality healthcare. We have a specialized group of nurses that work well together with incredible team work, and enjoy working with each other. We have team bonding activities throughout the year outside of the hospital and participate in maternity related community activities.

The NICU at Memorial Hospital West is a 20 bed, Level II open bay NICU. All NICU RN’s are NRP certified and are trained to attend high risk deliveries. Additionally, our NICU RN’s are cross trained to work in the Newborn Nursery and care for babies in the Mother/Baby unit at MHW.

The Nursery RN’s at MHW attend all vaginal deliveries and C-Sections that do not require the NICU team. All Nursery RN’s are NRP certified and provide immediate care to the newborn for the first few hours after birth. Additionally, our Newborn Nursery RN’s are cross trained to work in the NICU and care for babies in the Mother/Baby unit at MHW.

Oncology

We are the newest unit to join the rapidly growing oncology team here at Memorial Hospital West. Currently, a 34-bed inpatient general oncology unit with a patient population of primarily solid tumor oncology patients. The nurses also have opportunities to cross-train to care for malignant hematology oncology patients. In addition, the unit provides care for patients undergoing radiation treatment and therapy with specific radioactive sources. We welcome the opportunity to nurture the career development of compassionate individuals, who embody our shared mission, to heal the mind, body, and spirit of our very special patient population.

Infusion – Memorial Cancer Institute

Description:
Comprehensive infusion center that provides care primarily to cancer patients. The infusion units at MHW are currently spread over 3 locations to include: the 801 building, Breast Cancer Center, and Suite 151 at MOB with a total capacity of 41 treatment chairs. Our treatments vary from chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products as well as phlebotomy and non-cancer related treatments like iron replacement therapy. This a highly specialized area that prepares motivated learners with the skills required to deliver compassionate care to a special group of patients.

3 West Malignant Hematology Unit

Description:
This unit houses the Moffitt MHCT program. We take care of all types of blood cancers as well as other forms of blood abnormalities such as aplastic anemia. We have 33 inpatient private rooms and 7 outpatient rooms. We also perform Stem Cell transplants. We will be doing CAR-T cell therapy treatment as well.

This unit is designed to provide care to patients presenting with a medical, oncology, or hematological condition requiring acute nursing care. In addition, the unit provides care for post-operative surgical patients, as well as patients undergoing radiation treatment and therapy with specific radioactive sources.

OR nurses are key players in the surgical team and their attention to detail and boldness helps them advocate for their patient and set the tone for the surgical day.
In addition to the RN Fellowship program, every nurse will attend the perioperative program at Broward College for 3 months. This course is comprised of clinical experience at the various operating rooms across the system and a didactic component at Broward College. Upon completion of the perioperative course the novice nurses will have acquired basic surgical case knowledge. At Regional we have 19 operating room suites including 3 open heart suites. Memorial Regional hospital is the flagship hospital within the Memorial Healthcare System. We are known for our level 1 trauma status, heart transplant and kidney transplant. We perform complex Neuro Spine procedures, Oromaxilofacial reconstruction procedures, several oncology procedures including HIPEC and complex Plastics, Orthopedics, Urology, Gynecology, General, Breast Oncology, and Robotic surgeries. OR nurses are key players in the surgical team and their attention to detail and boldness helps them advocate for their patient and to provide safe quality care to our surgical patient population.

Description:
The Department of Surgical Services is comprised of the Operating Room, GI Endoscopy, Anesthesia, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Preop Holding, Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) and Sterile Processing Departments. The Department of Surgical Services and the Department of Anesthesia provides Perioperative, Procedural and GI Endoscopy nursing care and Anesthesia Services twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week to Pediatric and Adolescent patients. The departments are responsible for the management of patients having surgical or invasive procedures in the pre-procedure, intra-procedure and post-procedure period. The department includes:

  • 7 Operating Room Suites
  • Neurosurgery MRI Hybrid room & additional 1 Operating Room Suite – April 2022
  • Pre-Procedure Testing Area
  • 2 Endoscopy/Procedural Suites
  • 29 bed Pre/Post Procedure Care Area

Types of services offered include surgical and invasive interventions for any disease entity. The case mix includes a diversified group of surgical/Invasive procedures, both elective urgent/ emergent, inpatients and outpatients.
Surgical Services has a highly engaged and collaborative team and offers an opportunity to experience the best of the science, technology and heart of surgical nursing.

Description:
The Pediatric Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is a nationally ranked top 50 cardiac program by U.S. News and World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital annual rankings. We offer a full range of pediatric and adult congenital heart care, including heart transplantation. We are looking for nurses to join our Cardiac Interventional and Electrophysiology (EP) teams as we prepare to open our 4 new cardiac procedural suites at JDCH. We perform cardiac catheterization procedures on the tiniest of hearts or on adults with complex congenital or structural cardiac defects. We perform upwards of 400 cardiac caths per year and 100 EP cases per year. The Registered Nurse provides patient care as part of a multi-disciplinary team based on national standards and utilizing the nursing process. This is a great opportunity to learn a unique specialty and be part of a growing congenital heart program.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 26-bed intensive and acute care unit for neonates, infants, children and adolescents who become critically ill or injured. We provide care to various medical and surgical patients requiring invasive and non-invasive monitoring and procedures. We have specialized critically trained nurses, doctors, Respiratory Therapists and other support services. Description:
This Fellowship track is designed for RNs currently working in post-acute care and RNs with an active license who seek to return to practice or launch their careers in acute care. Features include a structured orientation program, an RN Refresher course, and a customized 40-hour RN Bootcamp at the Memorial Healthcare System Simulation Center.

Application Process

You should be prepared to provide the following information when submitting your application by scanning documents as one attachment to the application:

  • Resume, with complete employment history (organizations, dates, job titles, and responsibilities).
  • Top two track and location selections.

Nurse Recruiters will promptly review all submitted applications. If selected as a top candidate, you will be called and scheduled for interviews. Unfortunately, everyone will not be selected for interviews. If not selected for interviews, you will be notified electronically through our application tracking system in a timely manner. You are encouraged to view the status of your application via the Career Website at any time to know where you are in the application process.

If you are selected and hired, please be prepared to present the following documents:

  • Current Florida RN license
  • Current BLS
  • Current ACLS for Healthcare Provider card for all adult specialties except Case Manager, Infection Preventionist and RN Refresh to Acute Care positions.

How often do you offer the RN Fellowship?

RN Fellowships are offered 3 times/year and as determined by specialty area needs

What specialties are offered in the RN Fellowship Program?

Our cohort includes the following specialties: ICU, ER, Oncology, OR, PACU, L&D & CVI/IR. Additional specialties will be added as needed.

How long is the RN Fellowship Program?

The RN Fellowship program is one year in duration. Your actual orientation period varies by specialty.

Once I list a location preference in my application, will I also be considered for other sites?

We try to place fellows in an area that interests them, though it cannot always be guaranteed therefore you may be offered a unit that has the need and remains unfilled at the end of the overall interview process.

What should I expect during the interview process?

The interview will be conducted either virtually or in person and will consist of an interview with a nursing leader and a peer panel representing the specialty care area.

How many RN Fellows will be hired?

Each specialty unit determines how many positions will be filled through the RN Fellowship Program prior to applicant screening.

When hired as an RN Fellow, when will I be eligible for benefits?

Do you offer shift and weekend differentials in the RN Fellowship Program?

Inpatient RN Fellows receive a shift and/or weekend differential as appropriate.

What will my schedule be during the RN Fellowship?

  • When you begin employment, you will complete a number of orientation and education requirements which have varying schedules.
  • When you begin the unit orientation you will work the same hours as your Preceptor. Once orientation to the unit is completed, you will move to the regularly scheduled pattern of shifts for your position as hired.
  • Each unit has weekend and holiday requirements.
  • Time dedicated to the RN Fellowship Program activities will be accommodated in your schedule.

Is it possible to take time off during the RN Fellowship?

The RN Fellowship Program requires attendance to a comprehensive specialty practice course, as well as mandatory Fellowship seminars within the first year. The first 4 – 6 months of employment includes a rigorous orientation schedule (will vary depending on area of practice). It is strongly advised to not make plans until date of hire. However, accommodations will be addressed on a case-by-case basis

What staff support do RN Fellows receive?

The Program Director of the RN Fellowship Program, Directors of Education, Nurse educators, and Preceptors for each clinical specialty area have advanced nursing education and experience in transitioning experienced RNs in the clinical specialty areas they support.

Is there a time commitment after completing the program?

RN Fellows must be employed by Memorial Healthcare System on a full-time basis for a minimum period of two (2) continuous years.

Will I be required to sign a contract?

A two-year commitment agreement will be signed at the time an offer is made to the RN Fellow candidate as part of the new employee paperwork. This agreement is applicable to the facility and unit where the RN Fellow will be hired. The commitment is $5,000 payable upon non-completion of the two-year commitment.

Additional training agreements may apply based on the onboarding requirements for certain specialty areas. Further details to be discussed by the Nurse Leader during interviews.
